In the late 1990s, Callaway Cars was approached by Range Rover to create a version of its outgoing flagship 4.6 HSE, which would alter the company's utilitarian reputation. Under the direction of Land Rover, Callaway Cars of Lyme, Connecticut, engineered several key improvements for the 4.6 HSE. These components were then sent to the Solihull Land Rover plant. Just 235 were made, one for each of Land Rover's dealerships across the U.S., and only for the 1999 model year Range Rover. Up to that point, these were the highest performance Range Rovers ever produced.
The short-block engine was essentially standard, with much of the tuning appearing in the cylinder head. Intake and exhaust flow, power's best friend, was optimized by modifying the port, valve seat and valve guide geometry. An increase of 17% and 15%, respectively, was achieved. The custom Callaway plenum and air cleaner box was coupled with a carbon fiber inlet tube to provide the least restrictive air flow possible, and the Lucas GEMS ECU was appropriately tuned to make use of the mechanical upgrades.
The drivetrain was also tweaked to improve power delivery and efficiency. The transmission control unit was replaced, which provided better shift points to mat
